Dear Parents and Friends at Home:
It is often said that “No news is good news,” but I like to think that good news is our news here in second grade. The students will be reporting on current events on a biweekly basis. Each student will be assigned a day that he or she has to report the findings. The summary does not have to be long – just a brief synopsis of what was read. Due to the fact that the day-to-day newspaper can often be filled with stories that are grim, I am providing you with a list of resources that the students may use to find their news in addition to the newspaper. There are many children’s magazines and websites that provide articles for students to read regarding current events.
The students are to choose an article, write a few sentences describing what they read, and present what they wrote in front of the class. They are to bring in the article along with their summary. Please do not just send in the article with things highlighted. This activity will help to improve the students’ public speaking skills. We are very excited to listen to and learn about the news that the students will bring in. Enjoy!
