Week of September 12th

We ended our week last week with our second compliment party! The kids are on a roll earning compliments! I am so proud of them.

This week the kids will have their first Math Assessment. This will review the concepts that we have introduced so far and will give me even more insight as to what they need additional practice on. When you receive their assessment sometime this week, please look over it, sign it, and send it back. It will stay here with me! Our next unit will focus a lot on addition and subtraction facts. A great way to support this unit is to practice these facts at home. You can use flash cards or even play some games on the computer. I have links on the side of this blog that supports these skills. Enjoy!

Last week in Science we started to talk about Matter and the different states of matter. The kids did a really fun experiment where they had to drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet into a cup of water and observe the changes. It was priceless. I wish I could have captured every look on their faces! I did take some pictures and uploaded them to the Shutterfly site. Here are some words you may want to talk about that we will be focusing on during this unit in science: states of matter, solid, liquid, gas, and properties (characteristics). Throughout our science units you will see the underlining pattern of "changes". Second grade will be working with parent volunteers from the Garden Committee throughout the year on some garden boxes. This week we will get to observe as the soil is prepared for planting. We look forward to learning a lot and being able to observe some changes and growth! Please send an oversized shirt you don't mind getting dirty and gardening gloves (if possible) some time this week with your child as they may have the opportunity to help be a part of the process!

As we continue our journey through North America, the kids will research facts about North America and make a web on the computer about North America. We will also be doing a project on North American's Landmarks coming up soon.

We are continuing to work on writing Small Moments! I love reading the stories your "authors" are writing.

Reminders:

  • Picture Day tomorrow! Please send in the picture form if you have not already.
  • Scholastic Book Orders are due by Friday. I will place the orders Friday afternoon. I know this is a few weeks early, but I would like to send the order in so that we can get them back sooner. Please head online and check out all of the amazing books you can purchase. If you don't want to order this month, I will be sending home new forms in a few weeks.
  • Please remember to sign your child's homework log to show that they are reading 20 minutes each day. I do collect their homework logs. There are a lot without any signatures :(. Your child should also be recording what they are reading each night on their Reading Log. This is part of their homework and a practice that they should get used to.
  • Please return the yellow Highlight's order form, even if you checked "no". I need to place those orders tomorrow.

Current Events this week:

Tuesday: JC and Lauren
Wednesday: Michael and Morgan
Thursday: Sabrina and Tristan
Friday: Sarah and Ava

Today your child will be bringing home their first Home Link. These Home Links directly correlate to what we are learning in math. Please take time to check over your child's Home Link each time they have it. Instead of correcting it for them, I would encourage you to go back and circle ones that they may have missed. Then if they are still unsure you can sit with them and work with them through it. I will check over them, but find it even more valuable for them to work on it and correct it at home.

Since we are beginning to have math Home Links our Language Arts homework will shift a bit. The students will do their vocab definitions on Monday night, spelling words in ABC order on Tuesday night, and spelling sentences on Wednesday night. Please know that I will try to keep this consistent but it may change from time to time.
