This week is a review week in Language Arts. The kids had their spelling pretest this morning on the 40 words from the past 4 units. I am so proud of how well they did! I saw improvement from every single child! For the past 2 weeks the kids have gotten all of their vocabulary words correctly and at least 9/10 of the spelling words correctly. Keep up the good work!
Last week in Reading Workshop we continued to talk about making connections with our book. We learned that when we get to a part in our book that makes us think "uh oh" - we should mark that with a sticky note. We will be talking more about the "problems" that come up in stories this week.
In Science this week we are continuing our work on mixing different combinations. In Social Studies we have moved on to South America and will be exploring South America with Google Earth. If anyone ever wants to share about one of the continents that we are studying please let me know. We love guest speakers!
In math, we are working with math and time this week. Last week we discussed place value. The kids still find this a bit tricky, but they are getting the hang of it. Keep practicing with them at home!
Upcoming Events:
- October 28th: Fall Festival - your child will come to school dressed in their costume and then they will be able to change (if they would like) into other clothes before heading out to the Fall Festival. Please make sure that you sign your child out before heading to the Fall Festival. If you are not attending the Fall Festival but your child will be going around with someone else, please let me know.
- November 11th @ 8:30 - Poetry in the Park
- November 12th - Seussical the Musical $10 (tickets will be on sale at Fall Festival)
- November 18th @ 8:30 - 2nd Grade Performance!

Volunteers for Book Fair

Dear Lower and Middle Division Parent Reps:
This year’s Scholastic Book Fair "To the Book Fair & Beyond – Reading is Out of This World!!” still needs volunteers in order to operate on a full schedule, including classroom visits – last year’s book fair raised almost $10,000 for the library (a large part of the library’s budget) and parents purchased over $3,000 worth of books to support classroom libraries through our Teacher’s Wish List program. Would you please spread the word with your class parents and encourage them to volunteer ?
Volunteers are needed for two different roles:
§ Sales, customer service and inventory (2 hour shifts) - to help stock shelves, assist children with book selection (for the younger ones, creating their "wish lists” to bring home) and completing sales
§ Daily operations manager (full day shift) – oversee fair for the day, running register, supporting other volunteers – we need one person per day for Tues, Weds and Thurs. Training will be provided prior to the fair and co-chairs will be available by phone during the day as well as provide start-up/shut-down support each day.
