Week of November 7th

We have been working like crazy getting reading for our 2nd grade program coming up in two weeks! Last week we made our "balloons" to hang in the hallway, our "signs" for one of our songs, AND we painted our tshirts! They look amazing and we are so excited. Last week we did our first all grade combined music class. The kids sound amazing. Please practice nightly the poems for the program. We need them to be memorized in their entirety. Thank you to all of the moms who came and helped paint tshirts and hang balloons. I could NOT have done it without you. You guys are the best!

This week on Friday is POETRY IN THE PARK. This is one of my favorite events here at Shorecrest. Hopefully the cool weather will stay around :). The festivities begin on Friday at 8:30. Please bring a lawn or beach chair because there will be a limited number of seats. I have not received the order of classes. There will be a 15 minute snack break where the kids will come back to the classroom to have a quick snack. There will be snack for parents in the breezeway during this time. Please work hard this week on making sure your child knows the parts of the poem. Please also remember that your child can dress up on Friday. We would like them to dress up like zany "insects". They can wear funky tights, shirts, antennae, spiky hair, etc. Don't feel like you have to go out and buy anything, just be creative.

This week we will be reviewing in Math. We took our Unit 3 Assessment on Friday. We will be going over these assessments and reviewing the skills this week. Here are some of the skills you can continue to practice at home: addition/subtraction strategies, telling time, counting money, making exact change, coin exchanges, place value, and frames-and-arrows. Our next unit will be about Addition and Subtraction!

We are finishing up publishing a Cinquain poem. The kids had a great time writing poetry. Their published piece will be hung up at Poetry in the Park. I can't wait to do our Poetry unit at the end of the year!

We have been talking about adjectives. As you may have noticed, your child was assigned a country to make a flag of. The country started with the same letter as your child's name. The students worked last week in Technology and in class on researching 5 adjectives/verbs/nouns that began with that letter as well. We have been working on an alliteration piece. This has been a lot of fun. We will publish this week and they will become a part of our program next Friday.

With the program approaching, here is a reminder of some of the things we will need:
  • brown paper grocery bags (for rainforest vines)
  • clear/white gallon milk/water jugs (no yellow) for "ice" sculpture
  • stuffed animals - labeled with your child's name (the animals aren't needed until next week)-think South American rainforest and Antarctica only please.
We will also need volunteers to help set up stage on Wednesday, November 16th from 12 - 1:20 in the theatre as well as tearing down on Friday after the performance.

Please make sure your child wears uniform bottoms (shorts, skirts/skorts, or pants) on Wednesday, November 16th through November 18th. We will keep their flag shirts here at school. They will take them home after the show on Friday. Thank you so much!

The Book Fair is here through November 11th! I will be taking the kids over to make their "Wish Lists" on Tuesday. They will bring home their wish list. Ideally, it would be great if you could take your child to the book fair to buy books. They do have extended hours.

Looking forward to seeing all of you this Friday. Have a wonderful week!
