Week of February 21st

I loved getting to start the morning with the kids dressed up as their favorite characters. They were just precious and loved being able to share with their friends. I will post pictures to Shutterfly soon. Tomorrow we will be taking time to read outside as a Lower Division community. Please send your child with a towel or small blanket to sit on tomorrow. Thursday we will be heading down to JK to read with Mrs. Jotch's class for Buddy Reading. To finish up this great week, we will be shopping at Oldie Goldie on Friday. Please continue to send in books. The students need to bring money on Friday to purchase books. They do not need large bills.

Science
Our plants are "growing like weeds". The kids LOVE being able to watch and document the entire process. We are now on day 12. Thursday, the students observed and decided which plants they wanted to transplant or thin. Some plants were transplanted into another cell, while others were transplanted into our class "plot" or transplanted to a friend in need of one. They were so careful and thoughtful throughout the process. I got some great pictures that I uploaded to Shutterfly. Today the students began the task of collecting data through measurement. They will continue this task each morning this week. They loved charting on their graphs and recording in their journals.

Math
  • Mixed Addition and Subtraction Stories
  • Subtraction Strategies
Language Arts/Social Studies
We are continuing our study of reading nonfiction (specifically biography) texts. I am so proud of the research that they have done so far. We will be focusing on 5 Essential Questions this week while working on our project presentations.

5 Essential Questions
  1. When/where was your person born? When/where did your person die (if they have)?
  2. What has this person done that has affected others?
  3. Who or what influenced them?
  4. What kind of education did they receive?
  5. What are some of their major accomplishments?
My goal is to have the students present their projects on March 8th first thing in the morning - 8:15ish. They will need to dress up for this. The rest of the project they will complete here at school.
