The kids have come so far as readers this year! Today we had an awesome discussion during our read aloud. We discussed symbolism and the author's purpose for putting specific "symbols" in a story. I was blown away by their understanding as well as their discussions with one another. They are really enjoying this unit on friendship and are always eager to get lost in their books. Keep up the continued practice of daily reading at home!
We are finishing up prompt writing this week. The kids have enjoyed writing these fictional pieces. They have also learned some of the challenges that come along with it. We will begin our poetry unit in the next couple of weeks. This is always a fun unit!
Our plant unit has provided us with many different learning opportunities. Many of the kids have labeled this unit as their favorite so far. The students have followed their plants from seed to flower. Many of the plants have died, while others have flowered and even formed seed pods. These observations have led to exciting conversations. The kids are excited about the next unit: The Butterfly Life Cycle.
This week in math we are learning about: Patterns in doubles and halves, explorations (weight, equal sharing, and patterns), data and find the middle value (median) of a set of data. Please continue to work on addition and subtraction facts at home. Many of the students have grasped the multiplication concept beyond what I am teaching and would benefit from multiplication facts :)!
We are beginning to talk about Africa. We will be doing a project in class on African animals. The kids are very excited!
