The school was very
quiet Friday without the kids here. I have to admit, I missed them! We
are having so much fun and working hard. This is the time of the year
where things get CrAzY! I still cannot believe we are starting the 3rd
week of October! Here are some upcoming events:
- October 23rd - Picture Re-Take Day
- October 31st - Halloween Parade and Fall Festival - Please turn forms in ASAP
- November 5th - Book Fair
- November 8th at 8:30 - Poetry in the Park
- November 13th - Picture Lady (Library checkout will be on a different day this week)
- November 16th - 2nd grade program at 8:30
Please,
please, please work on the poems for the 2nd grade program with your child. They need to have
all of them memorized. The poems for the 2nd grade program are included on the pages at the top tabs. The
students also will be bringing home a sheet today with the poem parts
for Poetry in the Park. This is a long poem, but we will be doing this with the entire 2nd grade! The more opportunities the child has to practice at home, the more familiar they will be!
In math this week we will be working with Name Collections, Frames-and-Arrows Routines, "What's My Rule?" Routines, and Counting Strategies for Subtraction. As I always mention :) please practice addition and math facts with your kiddo. I will be checking with them to see how their recall of these facts are going. We would like to get them to where they do not depend on using their fingers or counting in their heads.
As readers, we are continuing our work in Reader's Workshop. I LOVED hearing about all the good work going on at home. Many of the kids told me how much they enjoy using their Reader's Toolkits. We are continuing our work on making connections with our books - specifically making Text-to-Self Connections. These types of connections help us better understand the book because we can use experiences we have had to help us relate to the story. Our mentor text this week is Owl Moon!
I am so excited to announce that we will be having our Author Celebration and Postcard Share on Friday at 8:15. Please join us! The kids will be sharing a story that they have written and revised and fancied up as well as their postcards they made about their North American Landmark! Please set aside about 30 minutes so that you can not only see and hear your child's fabulous work, but the work of the others as well. The kids LOVE sharing. They made invitations for you today, hopefully they remember to give them to you!
We have been talking about nouns in class - specifically proper nouns. Please make sure that when your kids are writing their sentences and/or doing their homework that they are only using capital letters at the beginning of a sentence or for names of nouns. If we both reiterate this, it will begin to stick! While I am talking about homework, please make sure your child reads all of the directions and that their work is completed neatly. How they practice is how they will continue to do their work.

The students will bring home a letter today explaining a fun little project we have decided to be a part of. The students are so great about reading 20 minutes every night. Scholastic is running an activity called Paws for Reading. For every 20 minutes that your child reads (and logs on scholastic.com/paws) a book will be donated to charity up to 250,000 books! The kids are very excited! Please continue to keep up the great reading at home. Be sure to fill your minutes out on your child's homework sheet and sign as usual. The only new thing is to register their minutes online at the above website. The letter that comes home today will explain it as well. Happy Reading!
Please also remember to get your Scholastic orders in soon. There will be no orders coming home in November due to the school Book Fair.
